The University of Pavia is one of the oldest universities in Europe. An edict issued by King Lotharius quotes a higher education institution in Pavia as already established in 825.

The University has a strong tradition in the area of the life sciences and medicine. Among its faculty, the University includes several famous geneticists, pathologists, biologists and physicians. These include Camillo Golgi (1843-1926) who received the Nobel Prize for his studies on the nervous system.

Today, the University of Pavia has a modern campus for life sciences and medical students train in the three research hospitals of Pavia: San Matteo, Mondino and ICS Maugeri.

ICS Maugeri is a modern academic hospital. It is part of the network of Italian hospitals with solid research programs. In the field of cardiology, the hospital is recognized as the center of excellence for the diagnosis and management of patients with inherited arrhythmias and cardiomyopathies. The Molecular Cardiology clinic directed by Professor Silvia G Priori is the largest clinic entirely dedicated to the diagnosis and management of genetic diseases of the heart. Clinical activity is linked to epidemiological research dedicated to the understanding of the natural history, risk stratification process and response to therapy for each of the several diseases that are treated. A genetic laboratory integrates with the clinical activity by using next generation sequencing and Sanger sequencing of DNA to identify molecular defects in patients.

The Molecular Cardiology team also includes a large basic science laboratory dedicated to the development and study of animal models of human inherited diseases and to the development and testing of advanced therapies for inherited arrhythmias. These laboratories work in synergy with the research team at CNIC in Madrid, Spain.
