Centro Nacional de Investigaciones Cardiovasculares Carlos III (CNIC)

CNIC is a leading international research center dedicated to understanding the basis of cardiovascular health and disease and to translating this knowledge into improved patient care. CNIC’s ultimate goal is for newly generated knowledge to be translated into societal benefits and a tangible return for the Spanish public sector.

The center’s resources are all oriented toward translating research results into changes in clinical practice and opportunities for the business sector. The Molecular Cardiology laboratories at CNIC work in full partnership with the laboratories at ICS Maugeri in Pavia, Italy.

The laboratories at CNIC are dedicated to the development and study of large mammals that are genetically engineered to manifest inherited arrhythmias and to characterize them by in vivo studies and in vitro electrophysiological investigations to dissect the arrhythmogenic mechanisms of diseases.

Silvia G Priori

Professor of Cardiology University of Pavia, ICS Maugeri, Pavia, CNIC, Madrid

Silvia G. Priori is professor of Cardiology at the University of Pavia and Director of Molecular Cardiology Laboratories at ICS Maugeri institute in Pavia and CNIC Institute in Madrid. Her research focuses on the study of clinical inherited arrhythmias and cardiomyopathies both in patients and in disease models.

Demetrio Julian Santiago

Senior scientist, CNIC, Madrid

Demetrio J. Santiago is a postdoctoral researcher focused on cellular biophysics and the role of the ryanodine receptor 2 (a protein essential to the heartbeat) on cardiac physiology and disease. He currently studies inherited arrhythmias at the Molecular Cardiology laboratory at CNIC institute (Madrid), led by Professor Silvia G. Priori.
