Avantea Laboratory

Avantea (www.avantea.it) is a biotechnology company based in Cremona working in the area of advanced animal breeding and genetics. Avantea is a privately owned company, founded in 1991 under the name of LTR and subsequently called Avantea. The leading activities are commercial services to horse, cattle and buffalo breeders and intense R&D activities in partnership with national and international scientists and research institutions.

Avantea research operates in the field of in vitro reproductive technologies, genetic engineering, embryonic stem cells and development of alternative tests for in vitro toxicology. The scientific projects developed by Avantea are reviewed by an independent ethical committee and they have been funded primarily by peer-reviewed grants by national and international funding bodies such as the Italian Ministry for University and Research (MIUR), the EU Commission, the European Research Council, and the National Institute of Health (NIH).

In 2006 Avantea started an ambitious project of genetic engineering in swine using state of the art genome editing technologies including CRISPR-Cas9. We have generated pig lines with GFP low PERV, Knock Out for three major xenoantigens (alfa-Gal, Neu5Gc and B4Gal) and Knock In for several human complement regulatory and anti-thrombotic molecules (CD55, EPCR, hTM, CD39) as well as GLP1Ser8M3R for increasing insulin secretion of beta cells. Besides xenotransplantation, Avantea uses Somatic Cell Nuclear Transfer and genome editing to generate pig models of human diseases. We have generated a pig model of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, Leigh Syndrome, Stargardt Disease and several other projects are ongoing such as the EU-Rhythmy project that has seen Avantea engaged in the development of the LQT8 pig model.
